Scene And Heard Logo

Scene And Heard was a local music magazine based in Cambridge, UK, which lasted for 32 issues in the period 1986 to 1992. My thanks to Paul Attwood, who was one the instigators, and Paul Christoforou and Phil Johnson who kept it moving over the years. Together with the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Rock Show and the various venues it made for a thriving and interesting 'scene' even though there were very few that moved on to wider success. Mostly it was filled with interviews, live reviews and record / tape reviews of local bands. As the small/medium sized local venues (Junction / Boat Race) started to attract ever bigger fish from the national touring circuit these were also featured. Here are some interviews I found in digital form (see below for scans of complete magazines):

Steph McNicholas not only wrote for Scene and Heard, she also had a whole journalistic career. She has recently detailed it in her book Town and Country Girl. You can hear (and see) her talking about it in a GTFM interview. She was also the other half of Johnson's Fiver.

There are quite a few videos of the bands featured in the magazine (and on Peeved) available on Youtube:

Scene and Heard was started to fill a gap left by the demise of Blue Suede News which had chronicled the local scene from July 1983 (and there are some very obvious similarities).

Having just done the scanning of the early editions I am reminded how primitive the production process was. The text was typed on an electric typewriter and then cut up and glued (using cow gum) on to a sheet of A3 (making two pages, e.g. 3 and 22). A blue pencil could be used for alignment marks as the reproduction process couldn't see it. The more professional looking headings were done with Letraset (each letter being rubbed down individually - hence the uneven spacing and lack of horizontal alignment on occasion) and when we were in a hurry or didn't have enough letters I used a Rotoring pen. Luckily we were fairly soon able to access a desktop publishing arrangement which looked much more professional. The paper on the early editions is quite thin and as you will see in the PDFs the back of the page is clearly visible.

There are a few issues missing from my set so if any has anyone them I'd be grateful if I could be lent them for scanning (steve@peevedrecords.co.uk). Thanks to David Metson for Issues 25-29.
